Burning the ‘Ring of Fire
You may have heard that the one-off Ferrari P 4/5 Competizione, driven by its famously rich badass owner James Glickenhaus, recently set the Ferrari-best lap time at 24-hours of Nurburgring. It did it in 6:51 a few days ago beating the previous record of 6:58.16 set by a 599XX.
What you might not have heard is that the P 4/5 actually caught fire at one point in the pits. You can see the rear end engulfed in flames above. Looks like the fire even made it into the cockpit. Luckily, it was quickly put out and no severe damage was reported, phew!
The Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus team later reported that the fire was due to a “splash of fuel flashing,” which makes sense when you look at the image closely. There are flames on the ground around a gas can. Looks scarier than just a “splash” though.
After finishing 12th overall in the 24-hour race, Glickenhaus wants to make some functional changes to the rear wing which haven’t been approved by racing authorities yet. If changes go unapproved, the car will be retired from racing and Ferrari will actually consider a very limited street legal version production run of the P 4/5 Competizione.
